“Modern Love”
David Bowie
Serious Moonlight Tour Rehearsal featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan
Las Colinas Soundstage - Dallas, TX - April 27, 1983
My favorite bootlegs are these oddball rehearsals and studio outtakes — mistakes and all, working out the bugs.
After seeing Stevie Ray play at the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival, David hired him for the “Let’s Dance” recording sessions, and invited him to go on the road for a year with the Serious Moonlight Tour, as these recordings bear witness.
That never came to pass, though, as Stevie Ray decided at the last minute to do his own thing with Double Trouble, going into the studio to record “Texas Flood.”
In the end, Bowie’s Serious Moonlight tour and Stevie Ray’s debut album were both great successes, but I wish Stevie had been on the tour when it pulled into Madison Square Garden on July of ‘83 with me in the house.
RIP Stevie Ray. I never did get a chance to see you, and that is among my biggest rock-n-roll regrets.
